A computer is an electronic machine that accepts data, and stores and processes the data into information. It can perform these operations because of the instructions given to it by the programs that run on it.
The physical parts of the computer such as the monitor, keyboard, motherboard, and cooling system are called hardware while the instructions that direct it is called software or computer programs.
